Luke 1:37

God's Impossibility

Luke 1:37

For nothing spoken by God is impossible.”

Why it is worth knowing

  1. “Nothing” is absolute: no situation, no person, no circumstance is beyond God
  2. This was spoken about the miraculous conception of Jesus: ultimate proof
  3. The verse invites us to bring the “impossible” to God rather than declare it settled
  4. God’s omnipotence is not a theological abstraction but a living, active reality

Where it sits: Luke 1:34-38

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?” The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. Behold, Elizabeth your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing spoken by God is impossible.” Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Background

The angel Gabriel speaks these words to Mary in answer to her question about how she could conceive a child as a virgin. The statement echoes God’s words to Abraham about Sarah’s impossible pregnancy in Genesis 18:14: “Is anything too hard for Yahweh?” Two impossible pregnancies frame salvation history: the aged Sarah who bore Isaac, and the virgin Mary who bore Jesus. The God who transcends natural law is the same God who calls us to trust him with the impossible situations of our own lives.
