Psalm 27:1

Fearlessness in God

Psalm 27:1

Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

Why it is worth knowing

  1. God is both light and salvation: he illuminates and rescues
  2. The rhetorical questions declare that fear has no logical basis when God is with us
  3. “The strength of my life” pictures a fortress where the soul is secure
  4. Faith in God is the antidote to fear of any person or circumstance

Where it sits: Psalm 27:1-3

Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers came at me to eat up my flesh, even my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell. Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

Background

David wrote this psalm facing genuine military and personal threats. Yet he opens with a triple declaration of who God is to him personally: light, salvation, stronghold. The three titles address three fears: darkness/confusion, condemnation, and attack. The psalm is both a song of confidence and an honest prayer, ending with the famous call to “Wait for Yahweh.” Real courage in Scripture is not the absence of threat but the presence of God.
