Romans 12:2
Transformation and Renewal
Romans 12:2
Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Why it is worth knowing
- Transformation begins in the mind: how we think shapes how we live
- “Conformed” is passive: the world presses us into its mold without effort
- “Transformed” (metamorphoo) is the same word used for Jesus’ transfiguration
- The renewed mind is the path to knowing God’s will
Where it sits: Romans 12:1-2
Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Background
Romans 12 opens the practical section of the letter after eleven chapters of profound theology about sin, grace, justification, and election. Paul’s “therefore” connects all of that doctrine to daily life. The word “transformed” comes from the Greek metamorphoo: a complete change from the inside out, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. This is not behavior modification; it is the renewal of the entire way we see and think.
