Why it is worth knowing

  1. “All things” includes pain, loss, confusion, and failure
  2. This promise is for those who love God and are called by him
  3. “Work together” implies a process, not instant transformation
  4. Good is defined by God’s purpose, not by our comfort

Where it sits: Romans 8:26-30

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.

Background

Romans 8 is one of the most celebrated chapters in the Bible, describing the life of those in Christ: freed from condemnation, led by the Spirit, and held secure by God’s love. Paul writes this verse not as optimism but as bedrock theology: God is actively working all circumstances toward the ultimate good of conforming his people to the image of Christ.
