Why it is worth knowing
- “Fearfully and wonderfully made” conveys awe: our existence inspires reverent wonder
- “Wonderfully made” points to the intricate, intentional complexity of human design
- This is a statement of worship, not merely self-affirmation
- “My soul knows that very well”: this truth is personally received, not just intellectually acknowledged
Where it sits: Psalm 139:13-16
For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well. My frame wasn’t hidden from you, when I was made in secret, woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my body. In your book they were all written, the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there were none of them.

Background
Psalm 139 is David’s meditation on God’s omniscience, omnipresence, and creative work. In verses 13-16, he marvels that God was present and active during his formation in the womb. The words “fearfully” and “wonderfully” both convey awe-inspiring, remarkable quality. This is not a passage primarily about self-esteem but about the glory of the Creator reflected in his creation. The implication is personal: before you were born, God knew you and fashioned you intentionally. Human dignity is grounded not in achievement but in being made by a personal, attentive God.
